Hi All,

Apologies if this has been raised before but I couldn’t find anything using the search function….

I need to buy myself a second hand car and would like a Mondeo (or similar size car). Any tips on the following would be gratefully received:

What sort of sale will offer the best value….dealer, private sale, internet etc???

In terms of how much money to spend…is there a minimum amount of money you have to spend to get a decent car or it is just a case of spending to the maximum of what your budget will allow?

£2-2500 gets you a 100,000 miler Mondeo, last of old model, easily, from auction.

Go for 'direct fleet' sections, within the sales & you'll get a 1 owner , reasonably well maintained example.

Or https://www.cargiant.co.uk you'll pay £400 - £1000 more than auction price, but have more of a look over the same type of car & a bit more peace of mind.

If you were looking for later vehicles, auction shopping, is an eye opening, if a bit daunting, at first, day out!!

Check Parkers car guide (do a google search) which will tell you prices for different conditions & years. Have this in mind if you go to look at cars before you go. I've ended up in small claims court 2ce with private sales, once the engine blew up day after I got it & 2nd time loads of engine probs & car unusable within a week, so get a check from someone who knows what they're doing. Dealers I wouldn't trust at all. In fact don't trust anyone! Know what you're looking for and what you want to pay max & research what to look for if you can't take someone with you.
