We give our staff those knotted bone things you can buy in Tesco for £1.99. She can chew on it for hours, but usually has it all eaten in an evening.

She doesn't get them often as she sometimes stops eating her dinner if she's had a bone.

We never let her have it unsupervised either. She doesn't chew it, she throws it around the room!

She has two Nylabones as well, but likes picking them up and dropping them! Have you heard the noise they make! Not good at 5.30am when there are other people still asleep (not me unfortunately).

She has had one Nylabone since November and has shaved away one end of it into a fine point, could be lethal with it if she wanted to.

One final point, no way would I stand for my dog growling at someone cos we wanted to take something off her and I can't believe other people do! If I want something off her, I'll ruddy well take it.

RAW chicken wings are great for training! ... and if you need their 100% attention! i.e ringcraft etc ...

I have no problem with Bones atall! what i will not buy are the rawhide chews as they splinter like mad! and also the manafactured chews i.e
(pedigree chum) ones as full of additives and orrible stuff!

I never gave my GSD bones and he was happy instead with a Galileo!

You can get huge ones and they last for ages with no risk of splintering so the dog can be left alone with it.

Ahh the Nylabone - yes they are good - i've had them before for other dogs! At the moment tho Shads loves chomping on 'lil ball' which is one of those slightly bigger than a tennis ball, solid rubber balls - dont know the name - think they might be made by the same people who make Kongs?

I tried giving Rude Boy the bones off pork chops once but instead of chewing them he snapped them straight in half and swallowed both bits  it's no wonder he's got such a big rib cage!

Now we get him rolled/twisted Hide bones and he spends weeks chewing over them, the last one I bought was about a month ago and he's just finished it and he's a big dog.

Our dog gets constipated with bones as well but I counteract that with a small bowl of milk at the same time as it has the opposite effect on a doggy digestion. I only give marrow bones from the butcher.[/quote

i was told not to give dog milk as they are lactose intolerant ...................so many confusing and conflicting advisors

That's why I give the milk as it has a "loosening" effect to counteract the constipating effect of the bones.

However ds1 and I are lactose intolerant as well so if ddog gets HM food it's done with lactofree milk:D

BTW I didn't do the dog growling at us either - but the situation was rather complicated at the time - and without an incredibly long post that would have me in tears, it's hard to explain.

I hope no one objects to me bumping this old thread, but there's lots of useful info in here and is interesting.

I bought my dog a lamb breast tonight and gave her it raw, it was the only thing i could find in the meat aisle with a bulky enough bone that didn't cost a fortune!

I am going to ask my local butcher for some bones next time i go and should get a bagful, according to my neighbour.

My question is, how often is too often to let a dog have a bone, generally?

She's had bones before and it hasn't affected her bowels or anything and i don't plan on giving them constantly, but just curious!

You can feed raw bones on a daily basis providing there is a balance in the diet of meat, bone, offal and (perhaps) vegetables. If you simply want to keep his teeth clean then a couple of times a week is apparently sufficient.

Ooh i'm sure she'd love one daily but unless my butcher wants to be v. generous then i refuse to keep buying bones from the meat aisle in Morrisons!

The other day i got a pack of two lamb bones, labelled as such - and not even very big for 91p. She demolished them both within 15 mins lol.
That could end up being quite costly

Well, your butcher might well be generous, ours is. Not free meat, like one lucky raw feeder here, but bones sometimes.
