  • I figured that asking where was cheap to rent in Oxford would be a stupid question and know he will have to commute which is not an issue...just want some advice from people who may know the local area and could perhaps suggest an actual town that is 'in the sticks' and is cheaper and within a reasonable distance to commute?

    Hi there

My mum used to live in Bicester which is just off Jcn 10 of the M40. That wasnt a pricey as other nearby towns... Banbury is more expensive, but nicer. Both are an easy-ish commute to Oxford as there is a park and ride service or the National Express which takes you right into Oxford.

Good luck with finding somewhere.. Its always an exciting adventure moving to another part of the country. I moved from Cheshire to Gloucester last May and now feels like I've been here forever.

thats a good point bicester is an easy commute to wheatly straight down the M40 and you get off well before the London traffic.
  • The truth is travelling into Oxford is a real pain, rush hour starts before seven on many of the roads. Until recently I drove from Bicester to Oxford and used to allow an hour - but I was regulary late to work as the traffic can be horrendous. I now live on the other side of Oxford (Witney way) and the journey takes about 45 minutes.

I haven't had much of a choice where I live due to partner being in the forces but when he leaves we are going to look at towns on the train lines (so may be moving back to Bicester!) as they seem to be quicker than travelling by car.

PS Bus prices are very high IMHO
Don't judge people on they way they look, the way they speak or what they're called because they can't help that.

Only judge people on what they say and what they do.

Re the Bus prices being high, I suppose they are, but its worth while looking at the packages for travel monthly passes etc, as there are big savings to be had.
I live in Cowley, and it costs me £2.90 a day to go the short distance into town centre where I work, but I could get a weekly pass £12.00 on Stage coach, and if I want a monthly one its £34.00 (4 weekly). Yet an annual one is £250. Its having the money upfront though, I suppose. I believe Oxford Buses are a bit different, but its not too bad. Parking is terrible. You dont bring a car into the town. Park and Rides are necessary.
One site is free, the otherws seem to charge about a £1 to park, and £2 to go into town on the bus.
Hope some of that is a help.
