Costs incurred returning faulty goods purchased on the Internet.

I purchased a DSLR two weeks ago. The other day it malfunctioned. I contacted the supplier who asked me to return it via Special delivery and they would check it. Emailed me today confirming that it is faulty and notifying me that they have despatched a replacement.

Now I can't complain about turnaround as they have been very prompt but there was no mention of a refund for the postage charges I incurred... also I had purchased a decent LCD protector which I had fitted to the camera and was unable to remove. When I returned the camera I did mention this but at the time they were hopeful of just being able to fix the camera so said it probably wouldn't be an issue.

I feel like I'm being a bit pinnickety but I'm down £16 for a camera that malfunctioned after 2 weeks. Do I just take it on the chin or am I entitled to some kind of recompense?

  • Have you asked them yet to reimburse you for the special delivery?

To be honnest this is something That i have had to put up with in the past.

There maybe something in their T&C's about returning items and a disclaimer about incurring costs

    Which company was it?

No I haven't asked them to reimburse me yet. Was wondering whether there was some kind of precedent for this before I asked! There's also an element of not wanting to rub them up the wrong way in case I have more issues later on!

if you return an item which is shown to be faulty then you are entitled to recover the costs of postage from them.

if you return a item which is discovered as not being faulty then you will have to cover the postage both ways

get onto them asn ask for that refund pronto - keep copy of the receipts

Thanks for that. Received the replacement camera today. They did acknowledge that the previous camera was faulty. Have dropped them an email asking them to refund my out of pocket expenses. Will feedback with their answer when I get it!
