If Husband Dies, What happens To His Credit Card Bills?

Hello,
I have been wondering if my Husband passed away, would the law say i have to pay them?
I am a full time mother at home and have no income.

  • AFAIK debts no longer die with you and the debt would come out of his estate. i am sure someone more qualified to help will be along shortly.

you are not responsible for your husbands debts although they may try to make you do so, esp if you own your home

Although you are not resposible for your husbands debts, his estate is. Whoever is dealing with his estate will sort this out.
  • It might be best to pay off the balance ASAP cos of the massive amount of interest charged.

As sicker says it would come out of his estate.
This may contain life insurance, pensions payments (if they aren't in trust) and possibly the house (depending on how it's held).

So ultimately they would have to be paid (unless you have nothing).

If your husband has a private pension then you would get either a lump sum or a pension or maybe a combination of both.

You might want to look at the situation to see what life asurance you need.
Also if you died, would be be able to afford child care? as clearly he can't work to earn an income and be in full time child care at the same time.
Some people say that you need 10 times salary i life assurance if you have kids. I think you need to work out what you would need in either scenario (your death or his).
  • Thankyou everyone for taking the time to reply.
  • I'd be getting a little nervous around about now if I were your husband though...
