raq

okay, sister-in-law in rented accomodation , part paid by council. Her and hubby working. Strapped for cash at the moment and have a friend living there and paying them a weekly figure for board and lodge. She is concerned whether she should declare this to the council. Private landlord is aware but not bothered as long as he;s getting his monthly money.
thanks for your time

Yes of course!
Why should she be subsidised because she's a bit strapped?
Actually, I'm a bit short this week so I think I'll go and claim some housing benefit and lie on the application.0 -
I assume the part-payment by the Council is Housing Benefit, raq? If so, any rent paid to them by the lodger would be considered as extra income, so they ought to declare it. If they don't they run the risk of being done for benefit fraud. Could the lodger pay direct to the landlord and cut them out of the loop?Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)

thanks for this info. unfortunately they always seem to work the INCORRECT way and don't seem overally bothered as long as they get the extra money. Annoying. I will tell them though what they could be faced with that is ofcourse if they do declare it.:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0 -
I think that you ought to remind them as well that if they don't, they may be found out and the situation would be a lot worse.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)

i certainly will. they lived together for years ( about 9 in total ) and never did anything about it. apparantely nothing was never declared:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0 -
If they are receiving Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit a non dependant deduction will be taken from those amounts. The amount depends on the income of the non dependant and goes up in a sliding scale. If they are only receiving a small amount of HBen/CTax Ben at the moment and 3rd person has good income it will probably cancel out their payments.
There will already have been an overpayment back to the time the person moved in.
However what do you mean by "they lived together for years...... and nothing was ever declared"?Torgwen..........

She claimed she was living on her own, working part time and boyfriend working fully time but was actually listed as living at his mum's for all that time.

I sincerely hope she is reported, by you or someone else.
It's people like this that make all those genuinely on benefits look bad.0 -
