There are loads of people selling sim unlock iphone software/firmware on ebay. Am I being ripped off if I buy them or can I find them for free

If you don't have a brand new iPhone it's best to run Restore under iTunes using v1.1.3 firmware. Make sure to back up all your contacts/settings/music etc before doing this.
When you've done this or if you have a brand new iPhone straight out of the box, all you need to do is download the latest version, extract all the files to a new folder, connect the iPhone by USB and run "FULL AUTOMATIC.bat"
In under 5 minutes you will have an activated, unlocked and jailbroken (able to run homebrew software) iPhone.
