Tyre sizes

I am after tyres for my Seat Leon and have checked a couple of sites for my number plate and they recommend:

Width - 175 Profile - 80 Wheel Size - 14 Speed Rating - T
However, I checked one of the existing tyres and if I read the tyre right I should be going for

Width - 195Profile - 65Wheel Size - 15Speed Rating - T
I don't know a great deal about tyres but that seems a pretty significant difference there. The wheels on the car are, as far as I know, stock alloys bought with the car from new so why would the websites have a different tyres setup?

I'm away to check the spare tyre to see what it recommends but if that's the same I guess I should order tyres with the settings currently on the existing tyres?

    absolutely.

I'd never consider asking any website what size tyres I should put on my car! I'd check what size were already on it!

The wheels on the car could be an option and the reg check is bringing up the stock steel wheels.
  • Thanks for the speedy replies, the spare, which is a standard wheel not an alloy is the same as the ones currently on the car. I'll go ahead and order the size of the ones on the car, just seems strange that both websites have a different size/profile etc.

Get the tyre sizes off existing tyres and do a search on tyre sites for that size.

Personally - I'd just go to a tyre garage, that I'd know would be ok..

For expensive tyres, then I know benefit can be gained from buying them off certain sites on the web, but not sure you'll gain anything.

I buy performance 15" tyres for £45 fitted, so there's definitely a lot to be gained by buying from the right place. Blackcircles.com are good, as are the Micheldever / Protyre outlets.

Look at your existing tyres and they'll have something like
    195/55/15 written on them
the first number is the width in mm
the last number is the wheel diameter in inches
the middle number is the profile percentage (depth over width as a percent)

  • i tend to find using black circles i can get a good brand name tyre for the same price as a garage try to charge me for a budget tyre.
i can get pirelli's (same as originals) for £53 each, for a budget tyre a garage wanted £50 each, the more you buy on B.C. the more you save aswell. so it probably worked out cheaper.

I find phoning around local fitters will beat the internet.
