Does this mean I've been refused insurance?

Hi All,

Another insurance question....

My boyfriend tried to add me as a named driver to his van insurance (he currently has 3rd party only) and after answering all the questions it was refused. They wouldn't say why, other than it was an underwriting decision. (I have 3 points for speeding on an 11 year old otherwise clean licence)

Now when I come to take out my own car insurance policy, and they ask the question "have you ever had insurance refused".. will I have to answer yes to this question? (seeing as it wasn't MY insurance per se, but they just refused to add me to my boyfriends insurance).

Thanks

IMHO You will have to declare it as being refused insurance. All the insurance companies share information and if you don't declare it they will find out anyway and they may refuse you too.

I AM NOT AN INSURANCE EXPERT AND I AM SURE SOMEONE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE THAN ME WILL BE ALONG SOON.

I could be wrong (and have been on may occasions!!)
  • This is a bit of a grey area to be honest.

Firstly you havent been declined insurance - you have been declined a quote (or ammendment) for underwriting reasons. usually the question relates to finances

I'll try to give an example, whilst its for home insurance it should show what I'm trying to put across.

If someone wanted to insure their home contents for £100,000:eek: and didnt have an alarm, the company they speak to will only cover contents over £50k with an alarm, so decline to give a price, this is for underwriting reasons whereas someone who has had a pol cancelled for non payment and then goes to another insurer, they may be declined due to previous non payment.
