Bump, because I'm going through exactly the same thing now......

Did you get this sorted out?

    Sorry, missed the 'bump'!
We decided to leave it and trust to luck and then promptly forgot about it (embarrassed face).
Now DS is at Uni and using his passport more alone we thought it was time to get it sorted. I've spoken to someone at the call centre who tells me because we didn't notice the mistake within the first 24 days we may have to pay the full hit! He's suggesting an appointment for me for the personalised service as my passport now needs renewing and taking son's along to explain, he thinks doing it face to face may help with them agreeing to change it free of charge but it means me paying 50 quid more in the hope that they do this!!!!!
I'm tempted to leave things as they are, it's only a few months difference - who would know? I can't really afford over a hundred quid for me and then for them to hit me with another hundred quid for him 'cos it's personalised also!!!!
The other alternative is to send both in by post with the fee for mine and nothing in his with a letter explaining why his is returned with no fee.
    What do you think?
By the way, his expires in 2018.

It hasn't been a problem for 4 years, why do you now think it will be? I would leave it.

If you phone the call centre and find out which office actually issued the passport you can send it in with a new form, photographs, Birth Certificate and a covering letter stating that you have just noticed the mistake. They should replace the passport with a new one with the same expiry date (free of charge) - you shouldn't have to get it countersigned if your son can still be recognised from the picture in the passport. (If you had done this straight after you received the passport there would have been no need for another form to be completed)

they will definately replace the passport free of charge but the new one will only be valid until 2018 as the previous one was, you will need the form 2 photos and his FBC - just put a note in with the application
    Titch :)

Thanks guys, the bloke in the call centre said that the policy was to charge and maybe, just maybe they may not as it's clearly their mistake. I'm tempted to carry on as we are but am worried that now I've actually spoken to them the details may be flagged up somewhere and next time he goes abroad they stop him!!!
