12 Month Rolling Contract......

I've just tried to cancel my Gym membership and have been told that i'm tied into a 12 month rolling contract. I'm only 2 months into that contract so have to keep paying for another 10 months.
They have said there's not a buy out unless it's on medical grounds with a doctors certificate.
I did sign the contract with the terms and conditions but didn't realise that that was what a 12 month rolling contract was, i just thought i'd signed into a 12 month contract.
Are these contracts even legal, i thought terms and conditions were suppose to be fair to both parties???? I'd reasonably expect to give a couple of months notice but this is ridiculous.
Anybody know of a way round this????

So you had a year's membership, and because you didn't cancel after a year, you have automatically been put on another 12 month contract - is that correct?
Unfortunately, if you signed it, then you are liable to pay up - it's not their fault you didn't know what the term meant. I would have a thorough check of the terms and conditions to see if there are any other ways of getting out of the contract, but otherwise I think you might have to throw yourself upon their mercy. A letter to their head office might have more impact, but you will be asking for a goodwill gesture so prepare for a refusal!0 -
A twelve month rolling contracts mean that you always have twelve months to run doesn't it?
I'd get them to explain what they mean by rolling contractIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
usually after the initial tie in period with a rolling contract you are tied for the payment period ie you pay monthly you're tied for 1 month, weekly for one week etc.0

You have signed a minimum 12 month contract, if your not happy with it, cancel it now and it will not carry on after the twelve monthsAre these contracts even legal
Yes and your bound by the terms and conditions, that you have agreed to by signed the agreement- thats what the signature is for!0 -
are u on a rolling contract as in month to month or a 12 month rolling contract as in 12 months sign up again for 12 months?!
i could understand how this could be mis-sold tho...0
