Home-edding, Microsoft software needed

Apologies if this isn't the place to ask this. We've been home edding son (13) for a year and he's changed from feeling dumb to knowing that he can!
I want him to follow an ICT course but our XP Home computer doesn't have Office. We need Excel, Powerpoint, Access and Publisher. I think there are discounts for education, but where I've asked (PC World) the prices are still prohibitive and I'm really not confident about buying on ebay.
Any suggestions where to get it appreciated.

You might be able to get a grant for your son. There is an educational discount but the software is still expensive.0

for word/powerpoint you could try open office ->http://www.openoffice.org its free and highly comparible to ms version you can certainly learn what is required from the ict course on open office i imagine...
as for the student versions of office these dont normally come with ms access unfortunately so you would have to pay more to use that software.0 -

And I know this is a bit late, but as for finding the discount, we found out about it through our local independent computer shop, so it could be worth phoning your locals. Don't know if you can buy Access separate: Open Office is good for the rest but AFAIK doesn't have an Access lookalike - but check that it is essential for the course you want to follow!Signature removed for peace of mind0

PC World do the discounted Microsoft Office software in special boxes, but I think you need an NUS card or other educational institution ID card. When I was at Uni many years ago there were posters up on the wall with a telephone number on how to get hold of the student discounted stuff.
You only save £30 against the full priced Microsoft Office 2003
If you don't mind buying an older version of Microsoft Office, you could buy off ebay, e.g. 2000. Be careful of the bargain Office 2003, could be counterfeit or already be registered with Microsoft, in which case you'd have to buy a new license.:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:0
