Lakeland Yogurt Maker without their yogurt mix

I've just treated myself to a Lakeland Easi Yo yogurt maker/flask and a box of their sachet yogurt powdered mixtures. However, the basic mixes are quite expensive and I wondered whether anybody out there had tried making their own yogurt in the Easi Yo equipment, by using milk and a couple of spoonfuls of a commercial yogurt mix to get it going? I used to make yogurt by this method in a wide necked flask years ago and wonder whether I could still do it using the Easi Yo equipment? Has anybody tried doing it?

That's what I do - 1l UHT milk and small tub of natural yogurt left overnight.

I make up the first batch using the Lakeland mix and then keep some left to make up the next batch with uht milk - can get 2 or 3 batches from this original batch and it still tastes nice (use the custard one)Kondo'ed 76 items from wardrobe, 4 carrier bags of books0

I haven't got a yogurt maker and don't want to buy one because I am trying to be self sufficient as far as possible so I want to make it without a gadget, as I do my bread. I know it's possible but am not sure how. Please can anyone give me some advice. ThanksWombling £457.410

Does a Thermos Flask count as a gadget?I have plenty of willpower - it's won't power I need.

You can make yogurt using your thermos flask - UHT milk and bought natural yog (couple of tbsp) as a starter - exact measures will depend on the size of your flask, and how you like your yog. Each batch provides the starter for the next batch - so theoretically, you will only buy any yog to start the first batch0 -
Thanks Squeaky and others for your helful threads and comments. I was very pleased with my first batch of Easy Yo yogurt made with the sachet mixture but will certainly experiment and try making some with warmed UHT milk and some bio yogurt mixture as this seems to be an equally successful and cheaper alternative.0
