As far as I know they should not be able to ask your employer what you earn as it should come under the "data protection act".
I know on credit card applications they ask for you salary but I have not had a problem in the past and surely if you don't meet the criteria they will refuse you a card but there are that many people offering credit cards so it wont be too hard for you to get one0 -
As part of the application you usually give them permission to contact your employer. I know Amex did contact mine, although I'm not sure about other companies. Check the T&Cs.0

They can ask, if you give permission, but not otherwise. It's unusual for them to do so.0

I am an employee of my own company, and I always put that down as my employer on applications - so I would know if they contacted my employer! None of them has yet.0
