With Enfield you just need to be on the middle-class side of the A10.

I don't think Enfield Island Village is that bad but it's near the industrial stuff around Brimsdown and not far from Ponders End which is a dive.
  • avoid enfield island villge like the plague.

the social housing part of it is full of people that have been moved from broadwater farm estate in tottenham.

en3 postcode is the least nicest. en1 is ok but getting like en3.

we are moving from an en1 postcode to cheshunt as we hate enfield.

it has changed so much and there is nothing good about it at all.
  • Thanks to all who responded. It's always good to get a bit of local insight - now I know a lot more than I did 2 hours ago!

I'm going to continue looking I think as I had some doubts about the area which have been borne out with these responses, particularly to do with location and traffic.

    Cheers.

    EN1 isn't that bad...

It is a clone town though which I loathe, blighted by Tesco, mobile phone and coffee shops.

Apart from a good old fashioned fishmongers in the town and the market it's completetly soulless, even Pearsons went all modern and lost its charm.
  • True, I hate clone towns too.

But then, currently I live in one of the darker, grimmer parts of SE London, where one doesn't go out after dark unless one is 'packing'. So most clone towns look like gilded Utopia to me these days.

Enfield isn't too bad at night now, most of the old potential trouble spots have closed down.

The main nightclub, Eros used to have a special deal - buy two drinks get stabbed for free.
  • Hi,

I live near Enfield, there are some very nice areas - Hadley Wood is En5 I think and full of 'footballer' houses. En3 can be quite rough - I work in the area. A10/M25 junction and roads leading up to them can get really snarled up as other posters have said. The buses are often incredibly full of school kids, and that is not always a particularly pleasant experience! Good luck.

the east side of enfield (edmonton) and into waltham forest is more industrial, but not more dangerous than most other parts of the UK. The west side (enfield north and enfield southgate) is more residential and on the greenbelt. if you are concerned about crime etc then the UK isnt for you.

I've lived on the Island and have just moved, and I have to say how happy I am, because my advise to you is to avoid like the plague. Like you I was attracted by the value you get for your money and during the day it's looks great. Our place was opposite the barge and in the summer when the sun is out it looks beautiful. But at night this is when all the gangs of youths come out and they make it hell for everyone else, banging on doors and running off, smashing bus shelters, boy racers and we also got burgled. There is a huge social housing problem, because with all new developments 10-20% will be allocated to social housing. Then you have landlords renting their property back to the council and you also have other housing trusts buying up property, altogether this amounts to a disproportional amount of social housing tenants well over 30%, far too much.

Also another tip, don;t read the Island Village forum, anything negative about the island is deleted.

Please feel free to contact me about this, I wouldn't anyone to make the same mistake as we did.
