Landline required?

When registering on play.com I was asked for my landline phone number:
"The phone number given must correspond to the landline at the cardholder’s address."
I left it blank and it returned an error saying it was required.
Is this just a way to get phone numbers for marketing, or a legitimate question?
What if I didn't have a landline?
Do you have to have a landline to get a credit card?
Advices appreciated. Thanks.

I suspect it has to do with identify fraud or credit worthiness. Landlines are a lot easier to trace then mobile numbers.
First Direct used to require (may still do) all customers to have a landline.0 -
It looks like a perfectly reasonable request to me or am I missing something.
How else would they phone you up if they wanted to................................I have put my clock back....... Kcolc ym0 -
...the point is I don't want to receive unsolicited calls or have my number sold to marketing companies. There is no 'opt out'.
If they want to contact me they can send me an email."You can't trust anyone these days"0 -
I use play.com all the time - my landline number on record with them is an old number we had when we had NTL .... I have never updated it, I have changed card details twice and never had a problem.I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes

FWIW, I have been shopping with play.com for yonks, and they've never called me, unsolicited or otherwise. If they've flogged the number to anyone, I haven't noticed because I'm registered with TPS, which sounds like it would be a good idea for you if you aren't already.0

Some companies are smart to all zero's. I put 01454 111111 thats the correct postcode and all 1's. Only once has this been rejected so I entered the companies own phone number. It worked.

PS I don't have a landline, just an unregisted prepay mobile.Xbigman's guide to a happy life.

If you already get loads of unsolicited calls, regeister your number here:

I registered about 3 months ago, and the 'junk' calls have virtually gone, just the odd one or two now, not a couple every night.0
