Getting married - new passport?

Hi,
I'm getting married later this year and then going on honeymoon the day after. I'll be changing my name so do I need to get a new passport? or just the name changed? And when do I need to do this? I've had a passport for 9 years but never actually used it!

Any advice much appreciated,

My Mrs took her passport in her old name, accompanied by our wedding certificate...

The tickets were also booked in her old name, to match the passport

I'm not entirely sure if you can get the name changed without your wedding certificate as proof so would be too late as far as your honeymoon is concerned. If your passport doesn't have long to run I think you can apply for a new one and get a rebate on the months remaining on your old one. I don't know what other honeymooners do, maybe just book the holiday in their single names and deal with passport changes at a later date?

Another thing to note is that some countries require you to have at least 6 months remaining on your passport at the time (or return date?) of travel (I mention that as you have said that you have had your passport for 9 years already.)

It runs out in august next year. The tickets are booked in my married name, but the passport is in my maiden name. Might ring the passport office just to check....

Hi there, i too am getting married this year (June) and our honeymoon is booked in my OH new name (my surname) - with regards to the passport issue, you can apply for a new passport 3 months before your ceremony, you need to ring the passport office or go into the post office to get the correct form, sorry i cant remember the form number and im at work so cant check, anyway, on the form you have to get the person who is marrying you to fill out a small section and send it in with your application, they will then pre date your passport to the date of the wedding, the passport can not be used until this day.

Hope this makes sense and helps

Do bear in mind that the fee to change the name on your passport is the same as the fee for a new passport. Good value for money? Your choice.

Personally, I would have bought the tickets in the same name shown on your passport. That is not an option now. Common sense suggests that you should be fine using your old passport and marriage certificate, but do check with your airline and/or tour operator.
  • You need a PD1 and PD2 form, this has to be signed by the vicar/registrar.

If you have 1 year left on your passport, they will carry over a few months (not sure how many though)

This gives the details and also copies of the forms.

You can apply 3 months before you get married - just bear in mind if you are going abroad for hen do's, you may need to make a personal appointment at the passport office - to make sure it's changed in time
