Home contents insurance and type of payout settlement...

I'll be shopping around for contents cover shortly, however after speaking to an aquaintence who has recently made a claim, i was informed he was issued with Currys vouchers and the insurer would not budge on this issue.
Mu question is (without going into too much detail), i have some expensive audio kit and a higher end plasma display (not a tv) along with a couple of watches which run to several thousands of pounds. Watches aside, vouchers from Currys (or similar) are of no use to me, so are there insurers that will issue a cheque or a similar alternative in the event of a claim (or was aquaintence just unlucky)?

Its pretty common for your insurer to insist you get your items from their supplier. If you want cash it will be at the price they can get the goods for.
As long as its an identical item as what you have i cant see it being a problem as you are then back in the same situation0 -

The problem is the kit is not generally available from high street suppliers - retail chains do not carry this type of kit as avarage punters wouldn't pay these prices for "a telly" etc.
The kit was sourced from professional specialist suppliers Currys, Comet, et al probably wouldn't even know what a display and scaler was, let alone source one.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
Generally if the insurers supplier cant replace they will be happy to look at estimates from your own suppliers. They may ask for two and go with the most competitive0

We are just in the middle of settling a large insurance claim with Norwich Union (Contents) and they are paying out cash in the form of a cheque.
I think you would ned to check what each insurer says in the policy booklet about how they settle any claims.
Also, if you can give the Loss Adjustor the name of your preferred supplier they can usually negotiate a discount.0
