in Credit cards
Hi,
i wonder if anyone can offer me any advise re a recent transaction on my credit card.
I had a credit card and paid off the balance, however, a £5500 credit was put onto my account, therefore, my balance was £5500 in credit.
Don't knoiw where this payment came from so left it for a month or two, then thought, will buy a couple of bits and pieces.
long story short, after a few purchases (roughly £1500), the credit card company has recalled the payment of £5500 without asking me or calling to explain, simply pulled it out leaving me with an o/s ballance.
Has this ever happened to anyone else or does anyone have any advice re - do i have to pay off the o/s balance, bearing in mind i cleared the balance originally to close the card and all of a sudden my card was £5500 in credit.
Many thanks in advance

You've spent £1,500 that wasn't yours, on a credit card, so , yes , assuming you haven't shut the car down yet you can just pay it off as usual. If you have shut the card I guess it could be more problematic - ie they could demand it upfront.
Did you not query this with them at the time? All that has really happened now is that they have removed the credit from your account, the money was never yours, and the fact you have chosen to spend £1,500 on that card is not really linked to the credit they put on your acc at all - you just pay it off as normal!! Do you think that for some reason you have some sort of claim to the money that was never yours?
( Sorry if I have missed a crucial point!!) 0 -
Ring up customer services and beg,you accidently spent the credit and you would like to repay what you have spent.
I say "beg" because unless you get back on the right side of the company this could seriously damage your future credit rating.
Act quickly and speak with CS and start paying back the debt.
A hard lesson to learn but you now owe them x amount of pounds.Previously known as Bokken, registered at MSE in Nov 04,computer glich deleted my access but it is fun building up my stars from scratch,again.:D0 -

What did you say to them when they asked you why you had credited a large sum to your account?0 -
You knew it wasn't your money, spent it anyway, and can't pay it back?
Get on the phone to them sharpish, and explain exactly how you are going to pay it off. Technically, spending money you know isn't yours can amount to theft....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
well, i did not spend the money as such, and i can pay it back, its already been paid back. when they asked where it came from i said i didnt have a clue ( i didnt ) so left it until i did. No one knew where it came from, so thats why it was so weird. One minute they are asking me where it came from because they never knew, 3 months later, its away again.
Anyway, i suppose we will never know.0 -

Its likely the large payment was a balance payment meant for somebody elses account, somewhere along the line a wrong account number was typed in, crediting it to your account.0
