Blocked drains and houses built before 1937

Our house is a little over 100 years old. We had a blocked drain recently. I couldn't unblock it and so called out a local company. £70 later it was unblocked, but the guy said it felt like something was down there (roots maybe) and recommended a CCTV inspection.

2 weeks later it was blocked again. This time I did some checking and found out that houses built before 1937 will most likely have shared drains and hence the local water company are responsible for maintaining them. I since found out that our next door neighbour has no manhole cover on her property - our manhole is her manhole.

After a few phone calls to Severn Trent I got a reference number and the next day they came and did the job - at no cost. The only thing was, they said a neighbour had to report an issue as well.

The number is 0800 783 4444 (sewers team).

am surprised you got through to severn trent....... it usually rings for hours!!! Your lucky in that your house is built when it was. I think the only other proviso is that no newer houses have been built and go ito the same pipework since or something like that. Some ouncils also do a free drain service clearance but most are now charging.
