attaching a usb 1 peripheral to a usb 2 port?

Can somebody please cionfirm this:

if i attach a usb1 peripheral (such as a mouse) to one of my usb 2 ports on my pc, does it lower the spead of the rest of my usb 2 ports? For example, would my external hard disk (which is USB 2) run at usb 1 if I attach my mouse (usb 1) at the same time?

Comments

  • The port can only run at the speed of the hardware, it won’t slow down the rest of the ports because they are separate.

No it wont slow the other ports down.

if you had usb 1 and attached a usb 2 peripheral to it, it would run at the slower usb1 speed

Another USB question if I can put it here rather than start another thread:

My pc built in 2001 originally only had 1.1 usb ports...so I added a usb2 pci card 4:1 - ie 4 external ports and one internal, but I've never been able to quite work out how to utilise the internal port and I'm using more usb peripherals than I have ports! So am constantly unplugging 1 for another etc.

Is there a way I can add something to the internal usb2 port so that I have available some more usb2s? I have 2 spare backplate spaces? thanks

You can buy USB ports which fit into the backplates which would connect into internal port - this would give an additional 2 ports.

Alternatively get a 4 port hub which fits into a drive bay (this would also connect to the internal connector) giving you 4 ports at the front. If you go for this option get one which uses a hd/floppy power connector (i.e. it is a powered hub).
