How do I copy mini dvd to dvd to play in dvd player

Options
Hi, I have a mini dvd sony handycam and have some home footage on the mini dvds that I would like to convert to normal size dvd to enable us to watch it on the home dvd.

Can anyone suggest some software to do this please, I have nero 8 but not being technically minded I cant work out how you dump 2 or 3 mini dvd's onto a normal dvd - any guides /instructions out there for a newbie ???

Many thanks in advance lisa

I might be wrong here, so apologies in advance, but I thought most home DVD players will play the various sizes - the tray will have a slightly recessed area into which the smaller disc will fit.

  • If you want to use software then I can recommend SONY VEGAS MOVIE STUDIO 8. This is not the easiest software to learn to use but it is good. About £45 (amazon etc) for the basic version which is fine for what you want to do.

    It comes in two parts.

    1. Video capture and editing
    2. DVD creation

When I first used it I burnt a few dud DVD's before getting the hang of it, now I love it. Making DVDs is very dependent on PC speed and even on a fast machine it can take a couple of hours processing before you get the finished product.

    Hope this helps.

There used to be a whizzo bit of software called DVD decrypter which was also very good at copying DVDs (from mini disc to normal disc). It was so good that the writer got a lot of flak from the big movie companies and had to pull it off the internet. You might find a copy by googling. ;) If that fails, pop over to the video help forums.

    Edit:
The image burning part of DVD decrypter lives on...

Might be ok for your application.

You'll need to insert the disk in your computer's DVD drive and copy the VOB file located in the Video_TS folder on the disk to your hard drive. Once done, change the file extension from VOB to .mpeg.

Now you can use NeroVision Express 5 from the Nero 8 Suite to convert the .mpeg file to a DVD playable on standard DVD players.

i agree dvd players can handle the smaller discs so there is no need to convert. i have a feeling that they may mean mini dv and not mini dvd.

if they do have mini dv tapes then i am fairly sure windows movie maker allows you to import footage from a camcorder and then onto a dvd disc. you will need a firewire cable. there are two formats to import into. there is either avi or wmv. avi is better quality and more likely to work on a dvd player but when i transferred a 90 minute tape it used up 18gb. the second time i did it in wmv but it now doesnt work on certain dvd players. as the process took ages as well i decided it wasnt worth the hassle and i just connect the camcorder to a dvd recorder that is connected to the tv and did it that way.
  • mini DVD (if that is what you mean, you state convert to a 'normal sized' dvd so i assume this is what you mean) - is quite a limiting format. Difficult to edit.

As stated, most (all?) tray loading style dvd players have a small recess in the tray that lets you put in the small 8cm DVDs.

Read your manuals (camera and DVD player) for more help.

PS - don't ever try to put a miniDVD into a slot loading player (laptop for example) or you might do some serious damage the machine.

I have had some success with DVD2ONE. It lets me take content from multiple DVDs and make a single full size DVD out of it. I came across a link to it on the afterdawn.com web forum. That's a great place for newbies to search out video how-to's.

Use Windows Explorer, and just rename the file.
