Hi
Just thought I should post a thread congratulating Egg on identifying my Egg Money card had been cloned.
It was used on iTunes at 10:45 for 51p and blocked as Egg realised it was not part of my normal spend profile. I wonder how many other credit card companies would have blocked such a small value transaction.
Yes, it means my card has been cloned - I don't know how - but at least Egg have saved me even more aggro by suspending the account immediately.
Well done again, Egg.

Hmm, personally I've always thought that Egg tend to go over the top on this. They've phoned up to verify legitimate transactions more than other card providers that I've done any regular spending with.
There was once when they left a message on my answering machine which I didn't bother to respond to. Then they froze my card in an attempt to force me to deal with it. Again, a legitimate transaction, but it's fortunate I had other cards to pay for the things I wanted when my Egg card was declined.
I suppose it's good that they check these things, however, the fact that they phone you and then ask for security details means that, to my way of thinking, there's a risk of telephone-based phishing.
Indeed, for all I know, a fraudster may have phoned me up, asked for the security details, and then used the details I've just given them to log in on the web site to look up my transactions whilst I'm still on the phone, thereby enabling the fraudster to query genuine transactions with me, in attempt to convince me he really is part of Egg. I'm not sure how you can minimise that risk.

Yes, but the automated service gives you the option of speaking to an advisor directly if some of the transactions it gives you, you don't then recognise. Having had my EM card used recently online fraudulently, Egg were extremely efficient - account cancelled, replacement cards arrived the next day and the money was credited back to my account the day after. Extremely impressed that it was dealt with so speedily. Enquiries are ongoing with Egg and the site the card was used on - seems hopeful of identifying the b......d that screwed me.0

I've always found egg's security procedures to be good, and I'd rather they be a little over-zealous than someone run up a big debt on my behalf, which I then have to sort out.
One of the many things about egg I've always liked, but things seem to be changing with them! I can only hope not for the worse :rolleyes:0 -

While I am pleased Egg identified the transaction and blocked your card - I don't think its that special as it seems small transactions on iTunes are often used to 'test' a card before trying to use it on larger transactions - as such I would hope all the credit card companies are used to dealing with these..
More interestingly (for me) will be what happens when HSBC introduce their new fraud detection system that I was reading about the other day - and if other banks do something similar.

I thought of that when Egg phoned me up to query a big purchase and were asking me lots of details but refused to confirm anything on the account to reassure me that they were genuine. They told me to phone the number on the back of the Egg card. I did and was put through to customer services who verified my identity then transferred me back through. It did cost me a fortune on my mobile.0 -
Barclays does this as well and not just on their CC's but also on the regular accounts. All this fraud generated new jobs. LOL0

Agree with OP, have been phoned twice by Egg, one of which was fraud. By the time my statement was issued they'd got the money back, no hassle for me. I don't think it's just Egg that use this service though, I'm sure there are other as well and certainly Abbey will launch a similar automated service in April.0

So.....is there a theme here that egg cards suffer more fraud than others???0

I just think that Egg has a sharper system when it comes to detection perhaps. I can't see how one specific issuer could be targeted by fraudsters unless it was some sort of 'inside' job on an ongoing basis. I think you just need to look at the multitude of threads on this site to see the wide variety of complaints made about card fraud to see that it's not limited to any one company. You would expect Barclaycard to have a higher than others proportion given they are the largest issuer in the UK - but are there stats to demonstrate this theory?0
