Why do you consider retail work to be pointless?
Retail is a very important sector of our economy that employs a large proportion of the working population. There are plenty of jobs that I woudn't oersonally want to have, but I wouldn't insult those who do by branding their work pointless. The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.0 -

Not completely unskilled, but my favourite job other than my actual profession is delivery driving. All you need is a driving license, and if like me you passed your test before 1997 you can drive 7.5 tonners and earn more.
Whenever I've found myself between employment or needing a break out of my career, I've signed up to driving temping agencies and got decent-paid employment immediately.
I've waitressed, worked in shops, done admin temping in offices but driving wins hands down. Nobody breathing down your neck all day, no established clique to try to fit into, no unrealistic target. Just you, your CDs, and clear daytime roads. Its a great time to think, regroup and plan. And entertaining when you hop out of the van at the loading bay and see the looks of shock on the faces you greet when they see you're not a fat old hairy bloke0 -

Well, I work from home - am a Director for a small company dealing in Construction Training for very large construction companies.
To get here though, I worked for 14 years on sites across the country as a civil engineer; then went into the training sector; put myself through a degree and various other quals; worked for a national training provider; put myself forward load of times for projects that were highly stressed and was then head hunted last december to start this company. It's been an expensive slog but so worth it.0 -
