Permanent Health Insurance - Pre Existing Condition

Hi All,

Firstly, apologies for the long post!

I am looking for some sort of life insurance and from what I've read about Permanent Health Insurance this sounds like the sort of scheme that I would want to be part of. However, when i was three I had a kidney condition which affected the efficiency of one of my kidneys and will play a big part in the sort of cover I can now get and more importnatly how much I have to pay for it.

A year and a half ago I applied for life and critical illness cover through Friends provident for myself and my wife, when I received the quote back it came out at about £70 a month for the two of us and didn't cover anything that would be affected by my kidneys as Friends Provident had seen my doctors notes. After this I went to an IFA for advice and was told that I should see my doctor and be sure that my condition was under control. Since then I have been on tablets which have got my condition fully under control and I am now anticipating going for Permanenet Health Insurance.

My question is what are my chances of getting cover now (I understand that you don't really know that much about my condition and you're not doctors or underwriters, but anything would be great), and also do you think I should see another IFA???

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Rob

  • Rob,

Critical illness cover and permanent health insurance work the same way! They both require underwriting from the life assurance company in question.

    4 scenario's can happen:

Premium is accepted at ordinary rates. This won't be you!
Premium is loaded (i.e. increased) - This will be you!
Premium is accepted but condition is excluded (This is you!)
    Rejected (could be you!)

Basically, your condition is ongoing and required medication to keep under control. I am quite surprised that Friends provident has giving you critical illness cover. The price mentioned above is roughly right.

You will find that alot of companies may actually deny you cover or have exclusions like the above. Your premium will definitely not be cheap.

    Hope this helps.

Your IFA is right but expect to pay alot of money for this cover due to your condition.
