Money deposited in Account

My Girlfriend has had £72.10 deposited into her current account, it says counter credit dated today.

We have no idea where this has come from!!!

It is very strange.

Can they take it back now it is in the bank?

Is it wise to ask the bank? or should we just put it in a savings account & see if they ask for it within a few months??

Just remember that if it is a genuine mistake the real customer wil notice sooner or later, and the bank will debit your girlfriend 's account whether the funds are there or not.She then may get charged unauthorised o/d charges etc so IMO advising the bank would be the best course of action.

On the other hand - what would be the harm in saying nothing and just leaving it there to earn interest? It would still be there if they decided to take it back.
  • well we certainly wouldn't spend it, but I am not sure about telling the bank just yet, maybe we will see what happens in the next few days, she is in no danger of going overdrawn if it was taken back out.
