  • is my memory failing or did vesta curry used to be nice???

I remember it as being boil in the bag, but I bought one a while ago and it was dehydrated stuff in sachets - even after cooking the beef was powdery! yuk!

Possibly nostalgic memory failure. :rotfl: They were indeed dried and I can only remember this because when I first left home in the eighties and had to cook for myself, I treated myself to vesta Chow mein and was similarly disappointed to find that it was vile with powdery congealed lumps. Yeuck!

Some memories live with us forever, mine is Fish Fingers and I always hated them as a child and vowed that once I left home and could choose my own food I would never eat another fish finger and I never have.

Funnily enough there's a whole list of stuff I 've chosen not to eat since: Semolina, Angel Delight, Blancmange, Dream Topping or Fish Paste. I did recently try a tin of cream, another treat from childhod and that was just awful, but I loved it and would beg to lick the tin when I was a nipper.

  • Dripping on toast and tinned fruit with evaporated milk for tea on Sunday.Pop and Squash were only bought for christmas along with a packet of dates and figs.Liver appeared every week always well cooked !
  • I remember having evaporated milk on tinned fruit at a friend's house. I thought it was revolting but was too polite to say anything so they 'forced' me to have a second helping. Yuck!

I remember having loads of milk puddings, rice pudding, semolina, tapioca (frogspawn) even a macaroni pudding! Being my mum we had honey or brown sugar on them as she thought this was more healthy!

I can remember someone at brownies being amazed that I'd never had angel delight and Brown Owl explaining that not all families ate the same thing!

I wasn't allowed to play out on Sundays either...very boring! I used to sit and read in my bedroom. We didn't get a TV until I was 15 in the mid seventies I can remember watching 'The Incredible Hulk' thinking it was rubbish but still enjoying it!

I dont think this is a 50s/60s thing, probably more 30s/40s but my Great Aunt used to use the leftover Yorkshire Puddings as desserts with Jam on :D

I have tried it and it's actually suprisingly scrummy! :p

Still working my way through this thread and loving it, we always had the leftover Yorkies with Golden Syrup for afters. Still to this day, if I can, I save one for later and will sneak a spoonful of syrup and devour.

I thought of some other teatime treats; malt loaf spread with thick butter. Yum! I so wish I could get that now.

Toasted teacakes with butter, sorry more drool and yum!

Gosh you've all got me going now, someone else reminded me of the celery dopped in salt. Does anyone remember Primula Cream Cheese? In a tube like toothpaste. I used to think it was gorgeous and we would have it squirted along a stick of celery or on Ritz Crackers. I'm sure I would hate it now - plastic cheese.

Pickled onions - we always had a big onion peeling session and sacks of onions would be peeled by the whole family and jars and jars of onions would be pickled and 'put aside for Christmas', with ever increasing amounts of dried chillies to make them hotter than they were the previous year.

I remember Primula Cream Cheese I thought it was ok. We used to have tapioca and semolina amongst others which I hated. I can honestly say tapioca has not passed my lips for at least 30 years, thank goodness, lol. My favourite pudding was yoghurt and still is.:D
    Like good food and drink?
    Try Hotel Chocolat and Baileys.

  • My apologies if anyone else has already mentioned these, but.........

Jubbly's - they were an orange drink in a three dimensional triangular carton (for which I'm sure there's a name, although it escapes me). You could either snip off the corner of the carton and drink the liquid, or freeze them and use as an ice lolly. Del Boy's 'lubbly Jubbly' phrase comes from the advertising slogan.

Junket - this was made by mixing milk with a flavoured rennet which came in a little bottle. When it was set it was a sort of creamy curd on the top and flavoured liquid underneath. Sounds horrible now, but I loved it as a kid in the 1950's :D

Argh - I was going to mention jubblys!

The sweet shop at the corner too - Thompsons - with two walls completely lined with jars of sweets. If you caught "Mr" in a good mood he'd sell you 2oz of whatever, if he was in a bad mood though he'd refuse to do anything less than a quarter so you'd have to sneak back later when "Mrs" was behind the counter! Cola pips, sherbet pips or fruit pips were the best things to get on low pocket money - you got a lot in the bag for your 2oz!

Glad you found the thread by the way Elliebee - and you're right, your junket does sound horrible - don't go considering that as a christmas day pudding, will you!
