The worst smell in absolute must be kidneys. My mother used to buy whole beef kidneys and cooked (sweated) them, to clear them of all the pee and gunk, in water and vinegar, before cooking them properly.
The stench in the house was so bad when she did this that I had to leave. I spent many a night at my granny's because the kidney-stinky house made me physically heave!
I could never EVER eat the stuff, or any liver, or any type of offal. I was always a natural vegetarian I think, because I can remember from earliest childhood memories how they struggled to get me to eat some meat and my strong refusal, even when I was really hungry. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
The smell of turkey stock used to make me want to heavePlease forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

i like this thread, its very homely. i was born in the 70`s and dont really remember meal nights as such, i do remember mum using left over beef to make what she called curryish, which was chopped beef, onions baked beans and a couple spoons of curry powder all mixed up and put in a casserole dish, topped with sliced potatoes and browned in oven, they still have it now. i always remember my nan for cucumber sandwiches, strawberries from the garden and a saucer of sugar to dip them in, cream milk and she use to make the most fantastic sponge which she`d cut into sections cover with butter cream and the decorate some slices had cocunut on, some cherries, some hundreds and thousands etc then she`d put it back together and pop it on a serving plate on a paper doyle of course! it really was a treat. One day I will live in a cabin in the woods0

Me and you alike.I've never eaten meat and the smells of some of the things cooking used to make me physically sick.I remember my gran would cook something she called lights,I have'nt got a clue what they were. Some part of an animal but the stink from them was unbelievable.
Grandad would have his brains on toast for breakfast,a revolting mess that looked like grey scrambled eggs. Then there was his tripe and onions braised in milk.Pigs trotters and her boiled sheep head for broth. It was like something from a horror film. They relished them.
I was lucky that my gran was a proficient cook and would always do me something different that did'nt contain anything that had died sometime previously.
It's a wonder some of us were'nt put off food for life reading through these posts.:rotfl:0 -
What a lovely thread! I was brought up in the 60's and remember so many of the meals mentioned - we always had corned beef stew on a thursday when my dad ' worker over', as he did'nt like it. I have strong memories of Jersey new potatoes with fried eggs, an years later asked my mum, now 87, why - she said because the potatoes were so expensive I could'nt afford meat with them. I also rmember begging for ' bought cakes' - happy days, when all was home cooked and ne'er a fish finger in sight!0

I remember when I was about 6 or 7 (1968/9) I wasn't too keen on potatoes and tried to avoid eating them but my mum 'persuaded' me to eat them by pouring milk over them, that made it worse, sometimes it would sit there for what seemed ages before my mum threw them away.:eek:Like good food and drink?
