If it is Memtest you normally run it from a DOS boot disk.

I built a new computer last week, well not new but from bits I had laying around house, loft and garage.

    P4 with 2Gig ram.

I ran memtest on it for 12 hours and no errors.

I also ran a stress test and again it was OK. Now son wants it but as I offered him the parts if he built it some time ago I won't let him have it now.

I've been directed onto the Microsoft website to download a Memory diagnostic memory tool which I am supposed to burn to cd and then reboot. The problem is when i reboot nothing happens. I don't understand what i am doing wrong

You need to go into BIOS and change the boot order to CD/DVD as first boot and Hard drive as 2nd boot.

Then when you reboot you should see a message, "press any key to boot from CD" so you press a key and it starts.

If you do not press a key it will start normally.

    My boot order is:

    CD/DVD
    Floppy
    Hard drive
    Any other device.

Have you burned the CD as an ISO image?

Just guessing (because you don't say what the utility is) but if not it won't boot.
  • Yes the CD would need to be ISO to be bootable. If this is the case and the boot order is as it should be, then either try it again with a different disk, or test the disk on a different system to see if it will actually boot. If it doesn't, make another CD (ISO BOOTABLE)

Bet he just burnt the program to CD.

Do you now have "windiag.iso" downloaded?

If so open Nero (or some other CD burning software) and select burn saved image, then when it asks for the image point it to windiag.iso and let it do it's thing, make sure you have a blank disk in drive.

Then reboot computer and it should ask you if you want to boot fron CD.
  • What makes you think there is anything wrong with the ram, unless you have been dragging it across a nylon carpet, it is probably fine.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
