I was wondering if anyone has any experiences with Vonnage, was talking to a work collegue the other day and she uses it at home, was thinking of changing.
Any have any thoughts about the advantages or the disadvantages.
Thanks

It isn't easy to be categorical about advantages and disadvantages as it depends on which Vonage Plan attracts you and your present situation. For example, do you have a BT or a cable line?
Looking at V-Plan 1: at first glance it appears roughly comparable to BT's Unlimited Anytime Plan. The calls to Ireland or the extras might persuade some people to sign up. If you have a BT line there is no saving in line rental as you need it for ADSL.

Hi,
i use to be with vonage but moved away from them and now use voipcheap.com for outgoing calls and voipfone.co.uk for incoming / outgoing when required. Better call quality and works far better0 -
Can't understand the attraction of Vonage/TescoInternetPhone/Skype at all when there are the Betamax range of VoIP brands, most of which are based on standard SIP technology. I've used the latter two and similarly found general sound quality poorer than Betamax.
VoipCheap is one of the Betamax range of brands
See http://backsla.sh/betamax for a comparison (albeit a few months old now) of the various different betamax brands.
As well the variation of PRICE and "FREE" call countries there is also:
- a variation in how many free days you get - eg 120 on InternetCalls
- SOME will also work with SIP hardware, and some only with PC software
Worth checking them out.0 -
i have been using voipcheap.com and voipfone.co.uk for nearly two years on cable and never had any issuse with them really, voipcheap.com sometimes don't connect but this is extremely rare now, voipcheap.co.uk use asterisk servers in telehouse data center in the docklands from what i can find out, there customer service has been been extremely good. During this time my intenet connection has been with cable and i've used a sipura 2002 voip ATA which has also worked without problems, these can be picked up of ebay for about £15, the one i have supports two voice lines, but i'm looking to start using http://www.askozia.com/pbx/ in the near future.
When looking for providers make sure they will work with SIP hardware as this generally means call quality is a lot better.
I get a lot of people telling my they use voip, then later find out it's skype, a good qualiy provider and good kit makes all the differance, call quality is the same as a PSTN line for us.

If you have a BT line and use ADSL then you need to keep the BT line for the broadband to work and for the VoIP to run over it.
If you have cable then you can dump the phone line.
However Vonage isn't that great, plus you have to pay their fee each and every month, pay other fees such as joining up and terminating.
There's better VoIP providers out there. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
Conage is rubbish. Stay away from them.0
