UK-based US dollar credit card

Hi,

I'm a British expat living in Egypt. I would like a US-dollar denominated credit card (preferably VISA, but MasterCard OK also) from a company based in the UK, Jersey, Isle of Man etc.

I make most purchases in Egyptian pounds or other foreign currencies, get paid in dollars, and would like to pay my credit card bills directly from my London-based Citibank US dollar bank account, without incurring another currency conversion.

The only one I knew of was a US Dollar VISA card from Citibank UK, but even though I was already a customer and had their sterling credit card, they wouldn't let me have it because I was no longer a UK resident.

Does anyone know of any British companies doing US Dollar credit cards? Or any other ideas?

Not sure about credit cards but certainly most high street banks offering International accounts offshore will issue a $ debit card.

American express do an international dollar card. there is a fee though.

Hi,

You could try the Post Office Travel Money card: http://www.credit-card-comparison-online.co.uk/post-office/travel-money.asp

It's basically a prepaid card that you can top up over the phone or at a Post Office branch. You can "buy" one that has the dollar as it's main currency (they are available as dollars, euros or pounds) - which means that any transactions made in dollars will be it's currency - so no foreign fees on dollar purchases.

It's a Visa Electron - which should be reasonably well accepted.

Thanks for the suggestions... I already have a visa debit card linked to my Citibank UK US dollar current account, so I can do things that way, but there are times when you want to pay by credit card because of the protection and ability to dispute payments, especially when travelling in places where there is the potential for merchants to make false transactions.

This wouldn't suit this situation as the Post Office would take the payment in sterling not dollars.

HSBC Offshore (based in Jersey) also issue American Express Dollar and Euro credit cards and waive the $100 annual fee on the 'Green Card' if you have a bank account with them - which Amex charge is you go directly to them
