home made alternative to golden syrup?

Hi all,

I wonder if you can help. I need to find a cheap, old-style alternative to golden syrup. I don't mind if it's a bit runnier, or a slightly different taste, but as near as we can get to the real thing, but cheaper, would be great. ;)

Has anyone had any success?

Weezl x

Hi - I don't know anything about making a home-made version of it but was wondering if you're doing this because of the expense. If so, have you checked out Asda's SmartPrice version of Golden Syrup - it's good and far cheaper than those tins of the stuff. This one comes in a plastic jar with a screwtop lid. They also do their own SP 'runny honey' in a tub. I found them in my local Asda by the jams/marmalades.

Seeing as Asda do them, there's a good possibility that Tesco's have them as well but doubt if they'll be a cheap as the SP versions.

Mr T and morrison have very reasonably priced jars of syrup. I can't imagine it would be more economic to make it. Is there another reason youwant to make it?

  • If you want to drizzle it on porridge, the Tesco value stuff doesn't taste as nice as Tate & Lyle, but for baking it's fine. It comes in a nice sized glass jar as well that can be reused - rather than a plastic tub. (Although I must admit to several string holders made out of the syrup tins with a hole punched in the lid)

Well... The cheapest I've found syrup is 11p per 100g ( Asda SP) but sugar in Lidl is 6/7p per 100g so I figured I could about halve my spend on this. I know it sounds like a daft money saving, but we've got through 8 large jars of syrup since christmas, so I thought a saving there would be useful. Especially since the oats for the porridge it goes on has risen in price by 1/3 in 6 months!

I think they use one of the "brown" sugars for golden syrup - which may affect your costing.

  • It also occurs to me that it might be a thing where you concentrate it down, so that the equivalent weight of sugar doesn't give you as much syrup (a bit like condensed milk IYSWIM).

However the Tightwad Gazette has a recipe for HM maple syrup (not from trees) - maybe that would be similar.

I like the glass jars, so that if the syrup is a bit thick I can blast it in the microwave!

I've seen the maple syrup recipe in the Tightwad Gazette too- that would be worth making. Maple syrup is so expensive. We used to be able to get a maple flavoured one made by "Treat" but it seems to have vanished.Has anyone ever come the maple flavouring in this country? I've checked the main supermarkets and Wholefood Market in London.

I "think" it's asda who do a maple syryp flavoured one - hang on...

    ...

    dash downstairs...

    ...

It says Lyles Golden Syrup - Maple flavoured.

But it wasn't from asda - I got it in a local shop. It doesn't show on line but...

    http://www.lylesgoldensyrup.com/LylesGoldenSyrup/LylesProducts/default.htm

Says where it is available - and asda is on their list. Hmm... "selected stores".

Golden syrup is inverted sugar. I used to make homebrew in my teens and some recipe's called for it.

You boil a normal sugar syrup and the add some citric acid.

Do a Google search for "inverted sugar syrup". I am sure there will be websites with proportions.

Edit: Wikipedia has an entry for it
