Where to sell your books?

Hi,

I'm a 3rd year UG just a few months from finishing. Over the past couple of years I have amassed a pile of books that I no longer have any use for and I am hoping to sell these to regain some of the losses.

Does anyone have any advice on the best place to try and sell them? Obviously there's Amazon and eBay, but I've seen a few banners for other sites floating around (e.g. sellstudentbooks.com). Are these of any use? Perhaps it's best to just advertise them on the departmental noticeboard?

Any advice much appreciated! Cheers.

The problem with greenmet is that most books have a fixed price of £3 which includes the postage allowance. You'd probably be best lookig at Amazon and if you want some hints try the long thread over on the Ebay and other auctions board. (just follow my link)

On some campuses the university bookshop may buy books back if they are on course reading lists. They do only buy the most up to date editions though.

Your university library, although unable to take books, may also be able to advise on where's best to sell them as they tend to get a great deal of enquiries

Also, this is a bit cheeky, check the timetable for your department. Find a first or second year course, perhaps starting next term, that your books would be particularly useful for and target the students or the tutor directly. If you have a good relationship with some of the tutors/ lecturers they may help you out.
  • The University bookshops give you the tinyist bit back! If you are going to practically give them away, why not join the bookcrossing idea and just leave the books somewhere?

I think the way to get the most for them is to advertise them on noticeboards round the university. Some uni's have websites aimed at current students but also a bit for prospective students. Some of these areas have forums, where, in the past, i have seen current students advertise books. Good Luck in your last term.
  • My tip, what i did anyway, was to post on news groups, I dont know if your uni has them, about the books you have, put up posters in computer labs about the books you have for sale, and post them on notice boards.

I sold all my books this way, and i got 100% of the money, no fees to amazon etc.

And the best thing is if they don't sell that way, then just either give them to the uni used book shop, or sell them on amazon!
  • i would suggest two things

    1) sell them to the university for the uni to sell them to disadvantaged kids

    2) use ur student intranet to sell them - people on your course in teh 1st or 2nd year are always looking for cheap books

I sold a business law book for a score, and i had highlighted half the book!!. They guy buying said id saved him lots of reading coz id highlighted all the important parts!
  • I sold all my books by sticking notices out side of the rooms i knew 1st/2nd year lectures where held, food areas and toilet walls. The notice was on a A4 sheet of paper with small tear off strips at the bottom with my contact details on. What subject are your books?

  • Try https://www.Abebooks.co.uk though. They specialize in used books.

The problem with Abebooks though is that you need to register with them as a seller and it is very expensive. If you are going down that route then Amazon would probably be better as you can sell without paying an upfront fee if you only have a few items to list.
