Currently looking for something available the end of March and I've been told (I've never rented before) private is better than an agent. But I cannot find any privately advertised homes. I tried gumtree, facebook and the local paper.
Are there any other websites. I've googled until I can google no more!

A lot of them are region-specific.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

What exactly were you told about private being better than an agent ?0

I agree: agents take a lot of money from the tenant (and from the landlord) and provide very little in return. I have always tried to deal directly: however most landlords seem to feel more comfortable with the help of an agent and so do not advertise directly. Last time I needed to rent I tried hard to find my own landlord but in the end had to go through an agent.
I have had two experiences being a landlord. First time, I let directly to a family who had advertised in a local newsagent's window. They were model tenants. After they left, I let through an agent. The family that he found did damage amounting to about 30,000 pounds and did a flit, ripping off several of my neighbours.0 -
When I've rented privately, I've found the property via the local newspaper or word of mouth ...:happylove Tori Bellatrix :happylove
