Alternative Bank Account - where can I go?

Hi
We are starting a dmp with cccs 1st march and need an alternative bank account.
Our debts are held with

mbna
halifax
barclaycard
mint
co-op
goldfish
liverpool victoria
and a couple of catalogues

can anyone suggest where we can get another account, particularly that will give us a debit card of some sort.
Lloyd TSB will reactivate an account that we have with them but can only get a cash card that I can only use in a lloyds tsb machine which is a real pain.
Is natwest an option?
Wondered whether anyone knows who Goldfish are linked to?
Turned down by Citibank which lots of people had recommended.
Can anyone help?

Many thanks

What would you use the debit card for? Could you not draw cash out every week and stick to that. It would also help with paying your debts to use cash.

  • I usually shop online with Tesco - spend less, easier to keep to budget and also get lots of bonus clubcard points!!!

All banks provide what is known as a basic account. Most of which come with a Solo or Electron card. They don't advertise them much, but they are available.

    Take a look here http://www.moneyfacts.co.uk/banking/bestbuys/banking_basic_bank_accounts.aspx
  • Natwest worked well for us.
    Barclaycard 3800

If you are going on a DMP take a look at the link above it shows you all the basic bank accounts and who they are related too. Hope that helps.

Ive got a basic bank account which I switched from the fee paying one and everytime I go in there they try to sell me the fee paying one. Today they said it would help if I was buying roadside assistanceto have the Additions account. I told them I got this for nothing this year which is true as I got RAC membership with my Tesco Clubcard points. He didnt know what to say to that.

If you look on your Goldfish paperwork it should tell you what group of banks it is, then look at the above link.

I had been on a DMP for over a year and got an A&L account with a debit card they just would not let me have an overdraft - I did it through Quidco and got £50 cashback - not checked if they are related to your creditors though so again take a look!
  • Hiya

I have the basic bank account wit Lloyds TSB and although it is a pain that you can't get cash out, it is a visa debit card so you can still use it to get cash back.

I searched high and low and many banks won't offer a debit card at all if you are on a DMP. I did try nat west and everything was okay in the branch but three days later they sent me a letter saying that they wouldn't open the account because of the DMP.

Moral of the story, go to lloyd tsb!

I think Nat West and Mint are part of the same group.

    How about HSBC, Nationwide, Abbey?

Edit - not Abbey (connected to MBNA)
  • I'm bankrupt and only managed to get a basic account with Barclays - only an ATM card not a solo card even! But I manage! I use a 'pay as you go' Visa card for shopping online.
