How to hang fossil on a wall

Options
Hello,
I have recently bought a fossil fish on a slab of rock. The rock is 2 feet by 1 foot and about half an inch thick. It weighs about 2kg and I'd like to display it above my fireplace.

I'm unsure as to the best way to get this on the wall. A plate hanger would be ideal but they are not big enough or strong enough. Does anyone have any ideas or have seen some brackets that would do the job?

Thanks

Pete

I would recommend you mount the fossil to wood first as at only 1/2 inch thick the rock could crack easily if hanging on its own weight.

It is then easier to hang the wood on the wall using standard wall fixings (rather like hanging a large picture).

    Welcome!

As above, I'd clean the back of the rock carefully and then use something like 'no-more-nails' to fix it to some wooden plate.

Are you sure about dimensions and weight? The equivalent volume of water 2'x3'x0.5' weighs about 3kg; rock should weigh much more.

I would think mounting it on a board would be the best option.

I can't see you hanging it up though, it might be face heavy and fall away from the wall.
You'll probably have to screw the board to the wall.

If you use grip-fix, knock a couple of small nails to sit the rock onto and take the gravity weight. They'll be hidden under the rock. The glue will stop it falling from the face.
