how to mend health grill casing?

I bought the AWT health grill with timer on ebay few weeks ago and find it really useful.

...sadly daughter dropped something heavy on the lid and made a great diagonal big crack, about 5", in the silver outer casing.

There's a shard of the insulating material showing through, so worried about the safely aspect as well as spoiling the appearance.

any idea how to patch it up?

I wondered about sticking a piece of silver gaffer or carpet tape, but worried that the glue might melt and leach out.

any tips much appreciated. we're moving house and things are getting hectic, I think I've managed to break a toe today as well ! But at least I know how to patch it up.

Not tape, no. Even insulated as the top is - there's chance of problems as you say.

Hm... goggle for AWT and see if you can get a replacement lid?

People here have AWT's with books so maybe someone can post contact details for you.

Other than that - there's a DIY Board in "In my Home" where a whole bunch of people might be able to help you out.

thansk Squeaky. I do have the booklet, but unforunately it's been packed already !
On closer inspection it looks as the crack runs deep into insulation stuff, so presumably the heat will come through.
willpost on the other board as per your suggestion.

Hope you're not patching up that toe with gaffer tape.

Chance your arm and contact the manufacturer for a replacement part. No need to tell them you bought it from ebay. I've done this loads of times and never been knocked back - some suppliers actually just send you a new gizmo.

    Good luck.

    thanks KT.
I've just emailed them to aks if spares are available.

didn't waste gaffer tape on the toe - vinegar and brown paper is fine;)

I heard from cust. services that the lid is not available as a spare part.:(

 any more thoughts on patching it up?
I've paid £20 for it, so would *hate* to have to chuck it after just a few uses.
    thanks !

I'm not sure that any patch up (and paint job?) that would be safe is going to be of any real moneysaving benefit.

For instance you could get a fibre glass repair kit from Halfords, and a spray paint too (although I'm not at all sure how heat tolerant they are nor how warm your casing gets) but I think that by the time you've bought them and paid transpost costs etc and done your best to finish it all nicely you'll have spent a fair bit.

Edit: There are exhaust fillers that for sure would be heat tolerant but the one I used had to be heated (by rrunning the car) to set. There might be cold setting ones now?

It might actually be better to set this one aside to use for spares and keep your eye open for another one?

Or look on ebay either for a replacement lid or to sell bits of yours as spares to other people?
