Hi
I got my toyota corola t reg (58ooo miles) seviced from a local garage. He also changed the front brake pads.. help pz. After the service I noticed that there is a minor cranking noise coming when I start moving the car as I release the clutch.
The noise is not coming everytime I start moving from the stationary position but onle sometimes. There is no noise when the car is moving and it only comes in 1st or second gear when the car starts moving.

I took it back to the garage, the owner said that it is not related to service and it is just a co-incidendat finding. When I took the mechanic with me on the ride, he thought that it might be releted to the new brake pads. (But I am not using the brake when I am starting!!)

Any thoughts or suggestions on this would be immensely appreciated.

Many thanks
I wanted to thankyou a million times but its a shame that I can press the button just once :T

  • Are you sure the noise is coming from the clutch? Or is the noise just coming as you release the clutch? if so...

Could be the new brake pads moving about if the mechanic did not refit the anti rattle shims with the new pads

    or

The calipers could be possibly binding. This often happens when the pistons in the brake caliper get corroded with salt and muck on the roads, and start to stick. One way to check if they are binding is to jack the wheel off the ground and see if the wheel can be turned easily by hand. If you do this please do it safely and use an axle stand.

Check the wheel nuts are tight,if they are slack it can allow the wheel to produce a clunk as the drive takes up.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

    Many thanks for the replies.
Yes the noise does cme when I release the clutch but it is not constant as it does not come all the time. Moreover it comes only when the car moves from stationery position and not in motion or high speeds.
The nuts on the alloys look alright on the wheels.
I think i woill take it to the mechanic again.

    Thanks

  • You have a bearing on the clutch that moves up and down, when it gets worn? It makes a rattling noise
If it’s a knocking clunking noise when you’re steering? It may be your bottom ball joints on your steering that’s worn.
But if it only starts when you move your clutch? Then it’s the main release bearing that’s getting worn.
Normally you buy a clutch and a release bearing, the release bearing helps the clutch slide up and down on a metal rod.
When the release bearing gets worn the clutch gets harder to work.

    Hope this helps.

Which bearing is this? spigot bearing, clutch fork bearings, or relaease bearing?

Bottom ball joints are part of the suspension not the steering. While it is possible that the bottom ball joint could make a noise while steering, they would also be noisy while the suspension is moving up and down i.e. over rough ground etc. The clunking from the steering may also be coming from track rod ends, anti-roll bar links, CV joints, wishbone bushes etc etc.
But if it only starts when you move your clutch? Then it’s the main release bearing that’s getting worn..

Not necessarily, it could also be the first motion shaft in the gearbox or any of the associated bearings. It could also be diff bearings and so on.....

The clutch does not slide up and down on any metal rod! A clutch works by the release bearing pressing the centre of the clutch pressure plate, which allows the clutch centre plate to disengage from the pressure plate
  • Well i tried to help? i didant waste a lot of time picking faults in someone posts!
If i can try to help i will, I'm not a machanic but i try to do my own work.

  • I didnt try and waste time picking faults in your post. Whilst I understand that you are trying to help, giving vague or incorrect information will not help macgyver. The original post stated that the problem started after the brake pads where changed so it is obvious that is the place to start looking for the fault.

I have spent 15 years working in the motor industry as a mechanic so that is the reason that I was able to correct your post on a number of points. I did not sit down and decide to 'pick faults' in your post, I was just correcting you on a number of points.

No advice is better than bad advice.
