Buy or rent in California

For a stay of 18 months approx, would it work out to buy a property rather than rent one in California ?

To answer fully will dpend on the dates you are working there, the kind of visa and your kind of property (owned or rented) in the UK.
A mortgage would be deductible both Federally and in in CA along with Real Estate taxes which may swing the answer, if you want full tax advice please feel free to PM me.0
