Bank account help please!!

hi , previuosly i have had a bad repayment record on my credit file to the extent of which i couldnt get a bank account. i have now paid back all of my debt and have not owed a single penny for about a year and a half now. i still have a very basic bank account but am struggling to get an account with a switch or visa facility. i find this quite strange as 3 month ago i was able to take out a mortgage.

it seems that getting banks to trust you with an account with any facility again is impossible.

if anyone has ideas would be very helpful

  • Try the Co-Operative Bank's cashminder account. This comes with a Visa Electron card, which while not as accepted as its big brother Visa Debit is still pretty useful (pretty much everywhere takes it now, the main exception I can think of being the train companies for technical reasons I won't go into here). Bear in mind you have to apply over the phone, but the call centre people are very very friendly (and all in the UK).

Lloyds TSB were willing to take me on and give me a full Visa Debit card and cheque book at age 18 and 0 months, with no credit record whatsoever past a kid's current account with NatWest. They might be worth a shot, aside from them being the bank from hell if you go overdrawn without authorisation.

Also, some people here say they've had some luck with Citibank, but that sounds a bit pie in the sky to me.
  • Who's the mortgage with? Do they offer current accounts - have you tried them?
  • mortgage is with natwest, they will prob be my first port of call. if not il give the co op a call. thanks
