accounts for former bankrupts

I was discharged from bankruptcy about 14 months ago and was wondering which bank accounts people would recommend? I'm with the Abbey on a Basic Account and was told that this would become a 'normal' current account after about a year so I guess they'll do this for me soon - I've been being patient which I think is probably the best thing to do. But I'm wondering if there's a bank that offers a decent account for people like me out there? It's a struggle when you can't write cheques sometimes, and occasionally a debit facility would be nice (obviously I'm not interested in credit cards or loans). Any help much appreciated.

I suggest wait out the year with Abbey. Most accounts will be similar to what you already have - i.e no debit card etc...
Unfortunately it's a case of rebuilding your status again as a reliable customer and it will take a bit of time.
If the year with Abbey has already elapsed then it would be worth you enquiring with them about upgrading your account.0 -
Guitarguru - I was in the same position a couple of years ago. Abbey was the only place I could seem to get an account, and I'm still with them. They've been very good and I now have an overdraft facility (not used) and a visa. Can't remember if they automatically upgraded my account or if I had to ask them...0

Thanks a lot for your reply. I'd thought it would probably be best to wait and see after what they said originally but maybe I'll ask them now.
Best wishes,
