Employment law advice?

I am really not sure where to go to get advice (for free with no catches??) on an employment issue. Sorry is this is posted in the wrong place too!

My partner has been employed by this company for 18 months. 10 months ago he was offered a higher position with a 3 month probationary period, followed by a pay rise. When taking the job he received a "your role" sheet stating the position was as a transport clerk.

It's now 10 months down the line and the company have avoided the pay rise issue until now - despite HR's input and MANY complaints. There was a meeting yesterday and my partner was told that it's NOT a transport clerk position but that it's a data entry clerk (and I quote them "that any fool could do") - despite leaving my partner to schedule ALL inbound planning for the past 10 months. He is referred to in emails as the transport clerk too so we know something is going on....

My partner was offered a 50p raise (it should have been £2+) and they also happened to mention that a new system was coming in that would essentially leave no need for the transport clerk position. I am thinking that perhaps they have "used" my partner for 10 months to tide them over until this new system comes in??

We used ELAC (Employment Law Advice Center) years ago and their work ethics left a lot to be desired, is there anywhere that offers either free or cheap advice...and can anyone share their thoughts on this, we just have NO idea what to do! Thank you!!

  • Have you tried ACAS? You can ring them or go online. Also, the Citizen's Advice Bureau have legal representatives (quite often solicitors who volunteer) who will see you free of charge. In my experience they are usually straight talking and you are advised to make an appointment in advance to see them as they only volunteer a few hours.

Shaun is right - ACAS are the right people to help.

Go to https://www.acas.org.uk and find the local office number. I've found them to give great advice having used them as an employer and an employee (and often found them more useful than lawyers).
