Thank you, but you can only use that after 10am in the morning, I think you will find that colleges and uni's start at 9am

you can use them on the way home though perhaps.

  • No, he travels back after 4, and even if it was earlier I think this card only gives you a saving of something like 40p a day.

it is still some help, i have one and it gives u a 3rd off all train tickets after 10am, and before 10am it gives you discount but there is a minimum price of £8
so if its £10 return you should still be able to get it for £8, or it might work out cheaper to get single in morning without discount and then 1/3rd discount for the journey home.
I'm a student myself and I have to agree free travel would be great, but since it doesnt look likely with this govt. or the next i'll jsut keep saving as much as i can, tell him to join this site, its saved me loads :)

http://www.youngpersons-railcard.co.uk/ is the official website of the card too so u can double check everything

Presumably he's a year too old for the Educational Maintenance Allowance which is being paid to 16 year olds, ie those who did GCSEs last year? I think it's a rip-off that it's not also being paid to 17 year olds in their second year of A level study: I bet they'll have abolished it before the younger two get there!

Does the College have any hardship allowances? It could be worth asking, especially if it's such a struggle your son is thinking of giving up.

how do you get it being 40p, is there some kind of limit on it? if it's £10/day that's £5/journey so 1/3 of that woukld be about £1.60.

also why does he travel back after 4 if one of the days is a half-day? ???

ps. it might be worth getting him to get a job so he can pay his own (or at least part of) his travel expenses, especially as he only does 3.5 days at college.
