Should I give security code over the phone?

  • I used to work for a large call centre booking tickets for concerts and shows, when taking payment we weren’t allowed to proceed without the three digit number on the back of the card. It simply guarantees that you are actually in possession of the card and not using codes you have obtained fraudulently.

    The banks actively encourage retailers to ask for this code as part of the authorisation process in "customer not present" transactions, to cut down on fraud. In some cases they charge lower merchant fees to retailers who do, as an incentive.
