    I think you may be thinking of the oil viscosity modifiers that are like thick treacle (which make oil thicker), and not the seal (rubber/neoprene etc) conditioners?

    Castrol GTX High Mileage oil has the same sort of seal conditioners pre-added to it, supposedly to help prevent leaks etc.

    Best approach is to replace the offending seal, but if the car is worth next to nothing and the seal would cost £200 to replace due to being inaccessible a can of stuff for £4 is probably the better option.
