Poor picture #

I have a new Sony Bravia TV, this is replacing an old Panasonic CRT. I have a Liteon HDD/DVD recorder which worked fine with the Panny but the picture quality with the Sony is very poor. I have checked all the settings and cables. When recording programmes on top quality it is marginally better, but not as good as I feel it should be.
My question really is this - would I benefit from an upscaling HDD/DVD recording like the Sony HDR-RXD770? This has an HDMI connection and the Liteon only has SCART. But then again I am told that the TV does its own upscaling, and if I have another upscaling device it may confuse matters. My friend has a Sony HDD/DVD and she too is disappointed with the playback quality.
It's all rather baffling - can you offer me any advice please?

Yes, my Liteon does not have HDMI.

Im sure upscaling will help but I remember this problem maybe on this forum before. Im not sure if the guy replied if changing his cable worked, but im sure you will be able to improve your picture.

Standard definition is going to look poor on a HD TV. The TV does do it's own upscaling but it only works to a point because you're trying to upscale something with 480 horizontal lines to a screen with 768/1080 and it's going to look a bit poor. You cannot put in image information which simply doesn't exist accurately - it's a "best guess".
  • could it be the rgb setting i seem to remember something along those lines in an earlier post
