It's a prepaid maestro card, so not a credit card.

I actually had a splash plastic card when they first came out (before it was maestro). It was aimed at kids to be able to buy things online so me and some friends had one each when we were at school, although it seems to have changed its target market now.

It used to be similar to paypal in a way, in as much that websites had to accept splash plastic as a payment method. Where you see websites show the Visa logo etc they had their own splash plastic logo. Now it's accepted wherever maestro is.

It also used to be totally free, all money was made from fees being charged to the merchant.

It's changed now though, not only does it have fees they also seem, to me, to be quite excessive. See here:

I don't use prepaid credit cards so can't really recommend one if that's what you're looking for. If you're looking for a proper credit card then a splash plastic card isn't suitable.

Just thought I'd add that if you did decide to have a splash plastic card, then you can get £10 cash back through quidco for an activated card:
