Unusual ID Fraud - advice needed

I received an email yesterday from a leisure park confirming a booking which I hadn't made. I telephoned them and was told a booking for 4 tickets had been made in my name using my address, mobile phone number and email. They were booked over the phone (coming to over £50) and then arrived 10 mins later and collected the tickets. Thinking I was the victim of fraud I checked my bank and credit card and ordered my credit reports expecting to have found the payment taken from my account. Strange thing is they paid part cash and part credit card... and the card was not in my name. There has been no money taken from my account, and no requests for credit on my credit report. So why did they use my details?
I have never been to the leisure park before, I don't live near it and I don't know anyone who has been there either. I'm confused as to why they are pretending to be me for no monetary gain and now I'm not sure what to do about it.

The card was probably nicked - by using your details they aren't supplying their own identity details or anything which could be directly linked to them.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

I'd be rather concerned that someone's collated all that info though, address, email and mobile. I suppose it's easy enough to get hold of that but I'd be a little uneasy about it. Still ID fraud though even though so far you haven't lost out financially. If the card used was stolen as CIS says (and that would seem most logical) then the first address the police will come to is yours. Have you reported this incident to the police (it is fraud after all)?

  • there's also the fact that if the person who did pay trashes anything they'll come look for you.
  • Thanks for your help. I am worried that they have so many details especially when I am so careful to guard my ID. I have a local number for the police so I will call them tomorrow and see what they advise. I don't fancy be arrested on suspicion of credit card theft!

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Just explain. (Although saying that I had a friend that was arrested because their ex housemate stole a chequebook, police didn't bother to actually look into it further than he was a housemate and cheque was spent in his home town, you'd think they'd have at least approached him or investigated further without just knocking on the door and arresting him).

Have you moved house in the past year-could anyone else have been getting any of your mail?Dont know much about this, but if a company allows people to pick up goods, shouldnt they be asking for proof of i/d on collection? Maybe thats the reason they paid part cash-( to argue "well if i wasnt who I said, why would I pay cash?) If they HAD asked, you might not be in that situation. You might want to raise that issue with a Manager at the theme park.
