Hastings Direct - check renewal online!!

I have a car policy with Hastings Direct.
The annual renewal came in @ £180 and as usual I did a trawl through comparison sites etc. None significantly cheaper found then tried keying into the Hastings Direct site just to check quote and see what varying excess etc would do.
I entered all the SAME DETAILS as stated on my renewal and got a quote for just under £150 (17% less). :j and more than £0 less than the competition.
Phoned up to question this and the woman wasn't surprised and said the internet quote is often cheaper than the renewal quote!
How can this be?
Surely they should be offering existing customers the best available quote to retain business and save on entering in all these details which need to be verified etc.
Even if your renewal price seems competitive compared to the market go ahead and get a fresh quote online or over the phone from your existing insurer.
If you are due to renew (with Hastings) worth checking the figures on your existing insurers site.
I have Hastings to be really competitive over the past 3-4 years although I know this will be driver, car and postcode dependent.
