been using firefox for years now with no problem.had it open a bit ago but had to restart the pc and found that FF wouldn't open.saw in the start menu that there was a reference to starting it up in safe mode ( the application not the pc) so i did that and it worked.what might the problem be and how can i sort it?

I've not seen the problem myself, but is it possible that FF was in the process of a software update when you restarted? I think by default it does this invisibly in the background, so you would not have been aware of it.
Probably easiest just to uninstall, download the latest version and reinstall. Might also be advisable to export your bookmarks somewhere in case an uninstall deletes them.0 -
If Firefox starts OK in "safe mode" then the problem is likely to be something in your profile and/or an extension.
There are some instructions on how to troubleshoot these sorts of problems without losing your bookmarks or other important data in the link below.

this is usually the case of an addon or theme not working in a currently updated version. start in safe mode > tools > addons
disable any that are incompatible,
if this fails disable all then reanble one by one till you find the problem causing one.0 -
Download new version and install on top of the existing FF - export your bookmarks first and copy your plugins folder, once installed copy plugins back and import your bookmarks.
